Birthday bash!

I recently celebrated my son’s birthday with a party at my home. Although we put our fair share of time and effort into finding the right cake decorations to fit the theme (we had a space theme–the cake was decorated with a frosting sun, planets, and stars), I wanted to make sure that the party was not all about the food.
The party was held in the backyard (we got lucky with the weather!). I wanted to make sure that the kids were still comfortable. I had outside a insulated drink dispenser filled with ice cold water. The kids seemed happy to be able to have a cold drink when thirsty, and they were able to quickly get back into action. I made sure to write the kids names on the cups so that they could reuse them throughout the afternoon. It did not seem as though anyone was wondering why there was no juice, punch, or soda. All seemed pleased with good old-fashioned water. I had decided when doing my party planning that although the kids would get their fair share of sugar from the cake and ice cream, there was no reason that they could not have a healthy drink (that as an added bonus is not sticky when spilled).
We actually almost ran out of time for the cake and ice cream. We were all so busy with a craft project and then with a lot of active games, we nearly lost track of time. I am proud to say that everyone had fun, we all stayed hydrated without guilt, we got some exercise without realizing it, and still had time to sing “Happy Birthday” before the parents arrived.
Enjoy all of your summer celebrations!
