Fall is officially here! Although the days of 80-something degree weather are probably behind us, it is not THAT cold out yet! Go out and enjoy the outdoors! There are still several hours of daylight after school hours. Take advantage of them! Enjoy the outdoors on the weekends. Just because you may need a coat and even a hat and gloves, it is still great to go outside and be active! Whether you go for a walk and enjoy the sites and smells, have a neighborhood game of soccer or football, hang out at the local park, or choose to ride a bike (with a helmet of course), if you dress for the weather, you can very comfortably and safely enjoy yourself while doing something good for your body.
On that note, it’s time to go out–I just need to grab my coat! Read More »

lunch
School is starting this week or next week for most kids! It is now time to start thinking about what they can bring to school for lunch. I think that we can go beyond what most of us grew up with–sandwich, chips, and dessert (which was often a Hostess treat in my bag). Read More »

I recently celebrated my son’s birthday with a party at my home. Although we put our fair share of time and effort into finding the right cake decorations to fit the theme (we had a space theme–the cake was decorated with a frosting sun, planets, and stars), I wanted to make sure that the party was not all about the food. The season for farmers markets is here. Multiple farmers markets throughout the area will be opening soon. Not only will shopping at a farmers market be a “green” thing to do, it can inspire some healthy eating. Fresh produce has a way of looking and tasting better. Sometimes, just walking through such a market can make you want to eat well because it just looks so good–the colors and smells can be wonderful! (You may have to watch out, however, for some of the other items available at some of the markets such as cookies and jellies.) Why not look at the produce one day and just let yourself be inspired to try to make something new? You may even want to ask the people there for suggestions. You can check http://www.agr.state.il.us/markets/farmers/ to find local farmers markets. Happy shopping!

I’d like to start by writing about a favorite activity of this time of year–the summer barbecue! The recent and upcoming holidays, the end of the school year, and the (theorhetically) improving weather all bring to mind plans for the outdoor warm weather barbecue! Read More »
